Frequently Asked Questions

The Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee is pleased to announce the acceptance of applications for the 2017 Business Education for Talented Students (BETS) Program. The Program dates are June 14th-24th, 2017.

What is BETS? The BETS Program is a one-week residential program designed to introduce high school students from diverse backgrounds to the various fields of business (Accounting, Business Analytics, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management, Public Administration, and Supply Chain Management).

The program is designed to help students explore the dynamic world of business and business careers. Students will have an opportunity to participate in the preparation and presentation of a challenging team project. Additionally, the students will have opportunities to interact with diverse professionals from business and government, as well as visit and observe them in their work environment.

What other activities will students be involved? Students will attend classes, develop an executive presentation, visit a local company and shadow the professionals, interact with business students from UT, and hear presentations from various professionals on campus (admissions, scholarship office, Office of Undergraduate Programs).

Who will teach the classes? The classes are led by faculty members from the Haslam College of Business and area-wide business and community leaders.

Who may apply? The BETS Program is open to high school students from under-represented (i.e., Native American, African American, Asian American, and Hispanic) groups, first generation college students OR students currently eligible for free or reduced lunch. These students must be starting their senior year (current Juniors) in the fall of 2017 and have a 3.0 GPA.

What is the cost? There is no cost to attend; however, there is a $20 seat reservation fee once selected for the program. All program fees will be covered for students selected to participate in the BETS Program. This includes the cost of tuition, room and board, meals, books, and supplies.

What are the requirements to apply? Students must have an interest in business, but are not required to have completed business courses. Students must complete an application, provide a copy of high school transcript, submit a letter of recommendation, and show involvement in school, community, and/or religiously affiliated activities.

When is the deadline? The application must be postmarked by March 31, 2017. Students will be notified of their acceptance within three weeks of the deadline.

Where will students reside? Students are required to live in the residence hall at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville to help students become familiar with the on-campus living environment.

Who will supervise the students? Students will be supervised by University Faculty, Staff, Administrators, and trained college students.
